Tailgate Ministries came to The Mission, April of 2016, after Steve had been to a church retreat and felt called to start a ministry as a means to serve God and help others. They have been coming to The Mission every month since that day and have become one of our favorite visitors every month!
Every month, Steve Culpepper and his 15+ volunteers come loaded with grills, charcoal and delicious seasonings and make hamburgers and hotdogs with all the toppings for our residents. Everyone is so excited to have a real “cook-out’ barbeque in the courtyard. They start every event with a ‘prayer intention’ circle, and close with a blessing for the food. The aroma of BBQ on the grill and the sound of kids laughing and playing in the courtyard makes it a fun fest every month.
When asked, “Why call it ‘tailgate ministries” – Steve told us it’s because, ”we operate much like a tailgate party at a football game. We load up the food, the coolers, the grills and the people and then unload and start cooking wherever we are. “
The beauty of this ministry is that Steve was led to us after months of searching for a homeless shelter to serve. Every time he reached out, he was turned away one day he went to his Church “Prince of Peace Catholic Church” and was given an old business card to The Mission of Yahweh. Once he reached out to us, we said “YES” and the ministry was started just to serve our residents.
I’d say God was looking out for us the entire time. We had been praying for a ministry like this to serve our residents and Steve was praying for a place to serve – God said “Let’s make it happen” and put all the pieces together for this to be a wonderful success.
Steve is always looking for new volunteers, who donate time and cooking skills and want to be a part of this very rewarding ministry. If you’re ever in Spring Branch near The Mission and smell the BBQ cooking, it’s probably a sure thing – The Tailgate Ministry is here serving God. Thank you all for all you do! We love you!
